What is a STEMI?...

STEMI ("ST segment elevation myocardial infarction") is a serious type of heart attack. It occurs when the artery carrying blood from the heart is completely blocked by a clot. Because blood can't get through, the heart muscle starts to die.

Opening the blocked artery quickly can help reduce damage to the heart muscle and preserve the heart's pumping ability. That's why the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology recommend that blood flow be restored within 90 minutes.

Our average STEMI time is 54 minutes.

How we calculate our STEMI Time...

Our STEMI time represents the average time it took to re-establish blood flow for STEMI patients at UnityPoint Health - Methodist over the past 6 months. It is calculated from the time the patient arrives in our Emergency Department, until blood flow is restored.
