Methodist Emergency Department

More than 56,000 people come through our Emergency Department doors each year.

Patients are first seen by a doctor at triage in the waiting room. Methodist is the only trauma center in the region with a physician at triage. This prioritizing process allows us to give you the right care depending on the urgency of your conditions. It also decreases wait time.

We're a Level II Trauma Center, which means physicians, operating room staff members and laboratory services are always available to you.

The Illinois Department of Public Health recognizes Methodist as an Emergency Department Approved for Pediatrics, which means we have the equipment and specially trained staff to care for children.

Methodist is also a certified stroke center.

… We are Responsive. We are Ready. We are Methodist.

In November 2007, a Florida woman named Dorothea "Dot" Keating experienced the first signs of a stroke. Within the hour, she arrived at an Emergency room in Tampa - alone - clutching an envelope that contained contact information for her daughter in Peoria.

But no one at the Florida hospital called the daughter. And not knowing anything about Dot, they assumed that her confused mental state was "normal." They did not order tests that could have detected the stroke and allowed them to treat it while there was still time. Dot sat in that Florida ER alone for hours before her daughter learned she was there. By then it was too late. Dorothea Keating died one week before her 85th birthday.

The Methodist DOT Squad grew out of the realization that every day seniors come to Emergency Rooms alone. And even with the best medical care, they can benefit from a helping hand and a friendly face. DOT Squad volunteers are specially trained to serve as advocates for seniors in the Methodist ER. They can contact loved ones, ask questions the patient might not think to ask, or just hold a hand for comfort. The DOT Squad is one more way Methodist gives seniors the highest level of care.
