What is a Sleep Disorder?

A sleep disorder is any difficulty with sleep. There are many types of sleep disorders, including:

  • Insomnia—trouble falling asleep or staying asleep
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness—trouble staying awake
  • Sleep walking and sleep talking
  • Sleep apnea—irregular breathing or breathing that stops at times while you’re sleeping.

Some Signs and Symptoms of Sleep Disorders:

  • Irritability
  • Forgetfulness (due to poor-quality sleep)
  • Being overly tired
  • Choking spells, loud snoring, or leg jerking (sleep apnea symptoms)

Why is Sleep So Important?

Not getting enough sleep, or not getting the right kind of sleep, can affect your health, job performance, and relationships. It can even lead to accidents that cause injury or death. Sleep apnea can increase your risk of heart attack by as much as 23 times.

Methodist Can Help

Most sleep disorders can be treated, and without medication. We are the first accredited sleep lab in central Illinois and one of the oldest in the U.S. Since 1982, we have helped more than 15,000 patients enjoy a better quality of life through healthy sleep.

If you suspect you have a sleep disorder, call the Sleep Disorders Center at Methodist at (309) 672-4966. You do not need a doctor’s referral.

What is a Sleep Test?

You sleep in a comfortable private bedroom in our sleep lab. A trained technologist monitors you from a separate room throughout the night (or daytime if that’s when you sleep). The monitors record:

  • Your breathing rate
  • Oxygen levels
  • EKG (heartbeat)
  • EEG (brain waves)
  • Movements of your eyes, chin, and legs

A doctor who specializes in sleep medicine will study your test results and talk with you about treatment.
